About new dreamcasts - Will they play backups?

I'm just wondering if the new Dreamcasts will be able to play backups since I heard rumours that the new Dreamcast will include a CD-Check system to determine if the CD is burned or is the actual CD. Thanks for any posts.

I wouldn't worry about it for a while m8. I read on one site that Sega will probably never step up on Piracy, because of the popularity Sony had with the Playstation easily allowing backups with the chip or card.

Lets be honest, Sega dont really want to stop pirating, how many of you guys would have bought a DC if you couldnt copy the games, or more importantly how many of you guys have bought a dc since you can copy games, also it would cost Sega loads to develop a decent copy protection, and it would only take the groups 1 day to deprotect anyway......

Sega lose quite a bit of money for each dreamcast they sell, its consumers buying dreamcast games that makes them money.

consumers who buy a dreamcast purely for pirate games cost sega money.

In addition developers are VERY reluctant to develop for a console which has no copy protection (rumour in the games industry has it this was the real reason for EA's actions)

because of this sega will try anything to close the dreamcasts loopholes,

<unproven rumour>
The next batch of dreamcasts WILL have protection against Utopia's boot disk, but sega still haven't figured out how to stop echelons self boot process
</unproven rumour>

Woah bYtEsMaCk, ;-)

my post was to counter the arguement that piracy benefits sega, or that sega should in some way be "Thankful" to pirates.

There is NOTHING wrong with creating backup copies of your games, and I never said there was (its the sensible thing to do)

as for losing money on Dreamcast hardware: Its normal for consoles to be sold at a loss, The N64 is sold at £20 under production cost here in the uk

I'm unsure of the exact amount that sega lose on the dreamcast but I read it was around 20% in Edge...
