[B]It still "could be" the laser...... Over the past month or so, there have been quite a few reports of cd & cd-r games not working BUT DVD & DVD-R games still working fine.....

This is exactly what's happening on my unit - we tried 3 different dvd-rs and they all worked perfectly, it seems to only be cdrs that I'm having trouble with.

I'm certainly willing to take it apart and have a look, but I've got no idea what the messiah 2 or magic 3 chips look like. Anyone got a link to some photos of them?

CHip

I agree with the above posts, I have a Messiah 2 and everything boots. I have never had a game not boot. Check out the pics online of the Magic 3 and the Messiah 2 and see what u got. Also it could be a CD-R or DVD-R media problem. If it is burnt on crappy media it could cause boot problems as well. Food for thought.

Usually these days u can't go wrong with cdr media. It seems that any media will boot okay. DVD-r media still developing really so still some snags.

PS2 does have in effect 2 lasers in it ( CD and DVD) so theoretically it could be cd laser diode is knackered but unlikely.

A much more reasonable answer has already been sugested several times on this thread and it won't b the first time we've heard of chippers passing off magic as messiah!

Hope that it all works out okay in the end!!

well, it's official - I have a messiah 2. Took the ps2 apart (first time ever trying that, very happy when it still worked when I put it back together ) and it's definitely a messiah 2 chip. So, looks like my cd laser is on the way out. I'll mess about with some different media and see if that will make any difference.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys!

Andrew
