DVDR test?

If a playstation were able to play a DVD-/+R movie backup would this be a good indication that it would be able to play game backups?

That method of testing is actually used in trouble shooting chip installs. If the PS2 will boot a DVD-R movie, then the install of the chip is faulty (when backups don't boot).

But I've also heard that it's not a reliable way to test out the PS2.

Maybe someone else can elaborate. BG ? Charlie ? Dust ?

You don't need a mod to boot dvd movie backups, but if you are asking if it can play backups in the form of a dvd movie would it be able to play a ps2 backup if it is modded, then yes.

Yeah thats what I was looking to do. Thought it a good idea to actually test friends PS2's before I put in a chip and found they didn't work

ive always tested ps2 laser with dvdr films
so far if it reads a film it will boot a game on the same media
tests with a messiah

magic and clones is diff matter ,some reason laser seems to weaken when chip installed

ie games boot on messiah 37 pin socket, same ps2 same laser same game backup but the laser needs adjusting to get cheaper branded dvdr to boot with the magics or clones, messiah boots them

So if it works with the dvd-r movie back ups then it works with the games....
Thanx
And one thing....
If I get really cheap media like less than $1 for one dvd-r
would it work with the new version of ps2??

Some cheap media works great, such as Ritek, but even new PS2s are picky when it comes to dvd media. Get a few and see if they work before buying in bulk.

So, I just checked my friends v1 and it played a DVD+R movie. In theory it should play games when chipped, right?

It shouldn't be a problem especially since it managed to play +r.

After all the talk on here I nearly crapped my pants when his v1 played DVD+R. Especially since it has not been refurbished.

If a PS2 will boot a dvd-r/+r movie then thsi is a good sign it'll boot games but not necessarily a sure sign of trouble free gaming.

The reason for this being that a dvd movie is a lot less complicated to read than a constant streaming game like for instance GTAViceCity.

For example I have a load of dvd movies backed up onto bulkpaq dvdr that play fine but if I put a game on them it boots up at about half the speed and crashes mid game. ( avoid bulkpaq!)

It sound like yr mates PS2 will boot PS2 dvd-r/+r games fine but use best quality media for best chance at getting games to run reliably ie. traxdata or dvdmaster.

Also if u do hit problems then u can always drop a new laser in there

Lately I have just been using Ritek DVD+R. Seems to work very well. Also does anyone have a good site with instruction on pot adjustment?

take a look HERE!

Be very careful though as it is very easy to fry yr laser when adjusting the DVD laser intensity pot.
