Can Clone CD backup scratched game?

I'm trying to backup a copy of NBA street that has a scratch. Clone CD seems to slow down considerably when it's trying to read the disc but it eventually succeeds in reading the entire thing. But when I go to fire it up it'll usually freeze at the loading screen.
Is Clone CD unable to backup a scratched game?

Be sure you use the correct settings with clone cd, as long as you dont get any read errors and the burner is 100% compatable you should have no problems

I'm using Memorex CDs which have worked flawlessly for everything else. What "settings" should I have Clone CD on? I usually just pop the game in, read it and back it up a 2X speed. Should I be doing something different?
