ps2 online setup

I'm looking into getting broadband v. soon, but want to know about connecting the PS2 online. Is this the setup I'd need...

PS2 (with Network Adapter) > BB modem > socket

?

... in which case it's best I get an external modem so I can use it on my PC and PS2 ?

Also, I've read varying reports about modded ps2s online, so...
do messiah (1) chips work fine online?
