Friend broke his ps2 and now won't boot dvd

Hey people!

Well my friend slammed his ps2 with messiah chip onto the ground by accident and now the console only plays cd org's and backups. Dvd's wont boot, he has tried several.

Anyone know what it could be? Is the laser ****ed up? I know there are places who sell ps2 laser units but will this resolve the situation and is it easy to install it? I heard it has to be calibrated afterwards.
