Are Mod-chips only available via mail order?

Are there any brick and mortar stores which carry mod-chips, or do you have to buy them online?

I've never seen them sold in any store. Most places that sell games wouldn't sell them do to their purpose and/or legality.

There is probably some kind of contract they sign that forbids it.

I dont see how. The chip it self is legal, backups are legal, I think the only way they would bust you is if you were selling backups to people who dont own the real game.

A buddy of mine is thinking out opening a computer shop here in town, and if he did I would sell premods and the chips to any one who comes in and wants them. Just need to find some one I can buy chips from cheap But I dont think theres any law saying you cant sell a modchip out of your own store. You just wont find them at your local Wal-Mart.

One other question to you all (if you can't tell I'm new at this whole business) - all I really want to do is backup my Xbox games. I lost Halo when my nephew stepped on it, and would really like to not have to rebuy games again I have evolutionx works with any mod chip out there... so my question is, with that being my criteria (I just want to back up stuff and still be able to play on Xbox Live), what chip would y'all recommend?

I recomend the "x-ecuter 2 lite", but the "x-ecuter 2 pro" and the "xodus" (with the upgrade) is equally as good. It all depends on what your willing to pay, if you know how to flash a chip or not, and if you are willing to learn to flash a chip.

Porkchops, another thing you shoudl think about, how good are you at soldering? X2 lite, and pro you have to solder in place. But then again they do make pongo pins units for them. (Or is that just for the lite?) But that brings us to the Matrix. Its also uses pongo pins.

Like Quall said, you will need to know how to flash the chip if you go with the X2 pro, or the Matrix. Now I can say the Matrix is easy to flash, I dont know about the pro, never even seen one yet.

Also the Matrix has a down side to it. It can be a real pain in the ass for get lined up right on Ver 1.1 XBoxes. Also some people say their Matrix moves on them, I have not had this prob, but I think they may not have tightend the screw down tight enough to keep it from moving, only a guess.

Any way, get the X2 lite if your willing to solder 10 wires.

Thanks for all the help, I ended up purchasing The Matrix, as I haven't soldered anything before. I'm willing to play around with it and learn, but not with my Xbox, hehe.
