What is the best burner?

The one I have is a piece of crap, what should I replace it with to make backups of games and other software?

In my opinion your decision will be between a Plextor and a Lite-On. I think Plextors are great. But the problem at the moment is that the Plex 24X can't copy the latest version of Safedisk 2 the way it used to. The Lite-on can. I believe that a firmware update for the Plextor will fix this (at the start f/w 1.00 the Plex couldn't do SD at all by 1.02 it was brilliant).
Plextors are better built in my opinion and you get a two year return to base warranty, though the Plex is dearer than the Lite-On. The obvious choice at the moment would be a Lite-On because it can do the latest version of SD2 but don't count the Plextors out just yet.

IMHO I'd wait a few months just to see what happens.
Chances are by then that the scene will have more knowledge on this newer version of sd2 and how it's managed to reduce the numbers of burners capable of 1:1 copies.
I almost bought a PLex 24x last year, and now I'm kinda glad I didn't.
The choice is then whether to buy a cheapie which will do almost everything well, Or wait a few months and see what happens.
In the meantime, do what I do. Copy games to an image file on your HD, and play them using Daemon tools. Keep the images and when you get a burner worth having, burn cdrs like they're going out of fashion.

Just my HO, though

I am getting a lite -on 24102b on monday. I would recommend that and the PLex.

@Crispy, if you wait a few months, evethough new burner will come out, the SD2 people may develope a new tougher one, then you are back to scaure one. Just a thought
