Im stumped: BBC CDs
Trying to "backup" bob the builder and wallace & grommit software both CDs published by the BBC.
I have tried Nero and cdclone4. I have tried using both the panasonic/Matsh!ta DVD RAM LF-D210 and the Sony CDRW CRX140E as reader using image. also tried clonexl which doesnt spot any protection Copies appear the same can be read, but exectutable wont work Im new and dont know what else i can try. The wallace & gromit over 4 years old now, they cant have a full proof copy protection can they? |

It will have no protection so a straight copy will be fine.
The cd may be scratched or dirty - try cleaning it. Try reading and writing at slower speeds. Don't copy 'on the 'fly' Use re-writables in order to test these options out so you don't ruin ur disks.

Ive now used 6 CDs tryting all parameters. Its not dirty!
Its too much of a coincidence that the only 2 cds i cant "backup" are BBC. When I run them the cd starts to spin and stops no error is reported it just doesnt run, doesnt even complain. Have used nero and clonecd have used bith at write speed x1. I am starting to pull my hair and getting that I will solve it at any cost feeling!!! |

Might be worth doing the following to see if it's a reading or writing error.
1. Download and install Daemon Tools (follow link above or google search) 2. Once installed, mount your HD images of these cds woth Daemon tools. 3. Attempt to run them from the mounted images. Let us know the result. i.e. images not running then probs with reading the originals; images running fine, then probs are writing related. Then we can get somewhere

can i just add, thet the cds are both originals (not sourced from anywhere other than a shop!!!) and ive cleaned them, so that rules out dodgy copies or dirty disc.

First things first, do the originals install and run correctly?
Secondly, which OS are you running? If the originals don't run either, it could be that Wallace & Gromit being over 4 years old is incompatible with a modern OS like WinXP. If you are running WinXP you could try the compatability mode setting and run it in Win95 mode! Bob the builder is a newer game I think, but you could try the compatability mode setting as well. It could also be graphic driver related or DirectX, have you updated them lately? DrA. |

Dr A.
My PC is running windowsXP professional. Both original games run perfectly. Direct X is fully up to date. Although im a newbie to copying, im fairly pc literate so keep on top of driver issues, service patches and so forth. Altho both wouldnt do a straight nero copy. To save CDs im doing all my testing on bob the builder (assuming once ive copied one Ill be able to copy the other). So far ive got through 6 CDs!!! Ive managed so far without any problem backing up childrens software its only these 2 BBC ones Im having trouble with. I can even install from the copies. They just wont run. (ie ive tried the copy from an original install and it wont work, ive then reinstalled from copy and it wont work, but the original will work with the install from the copy - if u get my meaning). Ive now spent over 10 hours trying to do this (and I bet my nephews who will be providing me with an offsite backup storage facility wont appreciate the lengths I am going to).

Instead of trying to make a 1:1 copy, try copying all the files from the CD to a temporary folder then burn them back to a blank CD-R/RW using the same Volume label as the original CD.
See if you can install then. DrA. |

Thanks Dr A,
Tried it, used same setting (ISO/Juliet). And Ive now got the complete set of 6 matching CD coasters!!!! It didnt work!! As a matterof interest when testing a amounted image i used cdclones virtual drive. Ive also got daemon tools. But i cant see the daemon drive in windows explorer, (but i can in nero its a bit bizarre). What next? |

That may well be the case, but I have nero'd it, clonecd'd it and mounted theimage and so far none have succeeded.
Yet the original install and plays and uninstalls no problem. I just find it too much of a coincidence that my only other CD that does not copy (W & G) is a BBC CD as well. Someone suggested that if the mountdidnt work then the problem is with reading. How can i test this? |

Have you scanned the CD's for copy protections? (Just to make sure there's nothing tricky with 'em)
Some guy (stonecold) claimed that his copy were protected with Securom new 4.8.xxx Here
