Since the V7 is the "newer model".... That is what I would consider better.....

Not always the case BG as some of the v7's can need a lazer tweek after the mod is fitted to read backups , this was never a problem with the v5/v6 im not saying the lazer in the v7 is not as good just maybe sony have tuned it more so for reading originals ?
I would rather have a v6 thats just my opinion regards

thats true.
sony has gone out of their way to adjust the lasers so they dont like dvd-r and cd-r. but v7s have known to boot more types of media more successfully (dvd+r dvd+rw dvd-rw cd-rw)
