Rince, I did follow your instructions. I copied the GRAND THEFT AUTO.exe to the desktop as a backup. Then I put gta-c.exe in to gtawin, ran it, did not get any messages saying it was successful or not, ran the original GRAND THEFT AUTO.exe from the gtawin directory, and got a message telling me to insert the cd once Grand Theft Auto had started.

Okay, so that patch didn't work. Can happen. Now copy the backup "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" back to the gtawin directory, overwriting the one we tried to patch. This is to make sure that we start from a fresh copy. BTW where did you get gta ? Is it from the freeloader site ? Check Joe Forster's post and see if that's your version. The cracks I describe are all for the original edition, so make sure you've got that one. Try the second crack, gta-nocd.zip. Decompress that to the gtawin directory and this time run gtawinc.exe to crack "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE". Once again, tell me all the program does. Does it give a message ? Does it work ? I might add that your installation of GTA has to be clean, when did you install it ? Have you tried other cracks before ? The executable has to be EXACTLY what the patch expects, otherwise it goes wrong. When in doubt, reinstall GTA before applying the patch.

Another thing : you can always make an image of the cd on the hard disk with CloneCD, and mount that using Daemon Tools. That would take 600Mb extra free space, but it's almost guaranteed to work. And another thing, make sure you know the difference between a backup of a file and a link to a file, a link to a file has an arrow in the icon.
