What mod - chip have I got

I got my ps2 modded just before Xmas and got the following instructions with it

a) to play ps2 games, PS2 back-ups and Ps2 dvd-r backups, simply turn on press eject and insert disc, close drawer or press reset button.

b) To play PSX backups & originals, power on the console, insert disk, close drawer, put console into standby then press and hold reset

c) To play DVD films follow PSX instructions

d) To return back to PS2 mode from PSX or DVD film mode, simply power down machine by holding reset for a couple of seconds then press rest once

I had specifically asked for the Messiah 2, but after reading this

http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=38232

I am not to sure what mod-chip I have

Please could anyone advise me off what mod-chip I have

Cheers JohnJohn

It is definately not a Messiah 2. It could be a Magic 2, Apple, or Matrix 2,

This is confusing, as I have read on another forum, that the boot methods above, are the same as the Messiah 2, yet on the thread above it isn't

Well they are wrong. All you do with a Messiah 2 is stick in the game.

Sorry... My boot procedure post is not 100% correct....

For the Messiah 2

Playstation 1/DVD Movies: Hold reset until the eject light turns blue.... (Only takes about 1-2 secs...)

(This is assuming the disc in the tray and the tray closed and the PS2 in standby)

You definately DO NOT have a Messiah 2..... There is no need to press reset when playing EVERYTHING except the two mentioned above...
Just put the game in and it boots.....

As bighap said, You could have the Apple, Magic 2, etc....

Maybe the instructions above aren't all that clear

1) To play any PS2 backup games , whether they are originals or dvd-r, all I do is turn on the ps2, put in the game, shut drawer and they work.

2) To play ps1 or original dvd's or backup dvd's, I have to Hold reset until the eject light turns blue.... (Only takes about 1-2 secs...)

3) To return back to PS2 mode from PSX or DVD film mode, simply power down machine by holding reset for a couple of seconds and follow step 1

So is this not the same as you are explaining BG

Another question while I'm here

What is the best media for backing up PS2 games....the thing is I backed up Spyro last week ( using white top no brand disc but they were actually yellow on top ) and it played flawlessly until yesterday, when I had problems trying to get it to load...the browser screen was just coming on....I thought my mod was knackered...anyway after about 30 mins of trying to get it to load up, I took the game out of the ps2 and with a fine cloth, I polished it....I then put it back into the ps2, the browser screen came on for about a second or 2, then the game started as normal...I now have to do this with the game every time I load it....I then decided to copy spyro again onto a different media ( this time I used bulkpaq light green top / light purple bottom ) and it booted up no problems, no browser screen just came straight on.....my question is what media is the best to use and why after a week does a backup game decide it doesn't want to work anymore unless you clean it with a cloth first....I know it had a few scratches on ( I think this is due to the ps2 when the disc is spinning around inside as the tiny marks are round in size ), but can anyone explain this.....will my second backup, which also plays flawlessly ( even better than the first as it comes straight on and no browser screen )also go the same way as my first copy, and I will be back to cleaning the game every time I use it

Cheers JohnJohn

messiah 2 and magic 3 boots up the same !!!..

for those who think messiah 2 dont' need to hit reset...

what if you have a game playing.. now you hit eject to open the tray to put a new ps2 game in the tray .. NOW! how the hell you start this new game ?? By hitting reset !!!.. ( so stop say a messiah 2 dont' need to hit reset !!!) (but yes.. magic 3 is no good .. .. but 3.1 works really well !!! )

now to help SAFCJohnJohn..

simply put 1 ps1 game in the tray .. and put it to stand by by holding reset .. (red light)
now press and hold reset over 5 secs.. (disable mode for messiah 2) .. (under 5 sec is ps1 mod ) now if it was a messiah 2 in there.. the ps1 game will not boot .. if it's a magic 2 , magic 3 ps1 games will still boot..

But if it was a magic 3.1 it will be put in to diable mode as well .. but then you said you got it right before xmas .. which the magic 3.1 has not been out yet.....

psx-tech thanks a lot m8

Tried your method, and indeed the ps1 game won't load up, just get a screen asking me to put a ps2 game in, so can I definitely say that I do INDEED HAVE A MESSIAH 2 ( or could it still be something else ), and could you also help me on my other post about what dvd media is best

Again thanx a lot m8

Where can I get these discs from cheaply...and what is the difference between gen 3 and gen 4 discs...also these traxdata ones, what colour top and bottom have they got so I know what to look out for...also are the ones I'm using ( bulkpaq gen 4 light green top / light purple bottom ) any good.....

And finally are discs with a dark purple bottom better than the ones with a light purple bottom ( as I've been told the Infiniti discs have a dark purple bottom and are only £25 for 25 )

Cheers JohnJohn

P.S Do traxdata dvd-r's work on a pioneer 105 firmware 1.00

I've recently got some Bulqpak generation 4 dvdrs from www.bigpockets.co.uk and they work 100% on my version 7, and my dicky version4.

As for suggestions for other media, try these, they all work for me on both my machines (If they work in my v4 then they're pretty much guarenteed in anything!!!)

www.bigpockets.co.uk (as above plus traxdata when in stock)

http://playstationmods.com/cdr.htm#PURPLETOP (Highly recommended)

and anywhere you can find verbatim or panasonic(rf120's)

These are just ones i've tested and find to work. I switch between them depending who has stock

You'l find that your pioneer dvdr will write to near enough ANY dvdr's you throw at it. I've tried some really crap discs on my 104 and it's never not burned correctly. But if it works in a ps2 depends!

Hope this helps,
james

purple top at 0.40 pence each.....will these work on a pioneer 105 as the site says its untested on a 105......plus 0.40p each seem too cheap to be true

sorry mate, the link was to the wrong disk
i mean the NEO 4X SPEED PREMIUM DVDR
at the top. I've not tried the bulqpak generation 3 (i've got generation 4 which are fine)

http://playstationmods.com/cdr.htm

I used to use the previous disks they manufactured and they worked perfect apart from my knackered v4, the new ones work in that fine.
