Remember I said "Here is a hint"! Not the exact problem or solution. If anything it may very well be like you said, that his laser is at a poorer setting than on his friends.
Another hint! Try putting your ps2 in a vertical position that makes the laser freefloating and allows it to get closer to the disc without the resistance of gravity. Tyler!
