Problems w/ Sony DRX-500UL + PrimoDVD

I just bought a Sony DRX-500UL, which is the external version of the DRU-500, but when I run PrimoDVD or RecordNow Max v.4.1 the drive is'nt recognized. My cd/rw is and my liteon dvd player is, but not my new dvd burner. Is it because it is USB? I have a magic 3, which plays backup psx games great so far, and I am anxious to see if my psx2 games can be backed up also.
Any help on this would be great. Maybe I should try Nero?
