Tutorial for PS2/v7 SCPH-39001 with installation of Magic3 Chip

I am writing this tutorial out of gratitude for this Forum because without it I would not have been able to burn my PS2 backups. Many people out there keep wondering if the magic3 works, it worked for me. I will show you the steps I took from start to finish to install the magic3 chip in my PS2 which is a v7 SCPH-39001 and how I was able to burn backups of my original games and play it. If you have a PS v7 SCPH-39001 and want to know one method that works you may want to read this, if not then you can read it just for your knowledge. I also want to point out that any product, web sites, or brand names I mention here are not in any way the best or cheapest, they are just the ones that worked for me. I keep reading in the forums about one chip being better than the other, I really don’t know. I will tell you about what worked for me as well as what didn’t work, it could be different for you depending on what hardware you have. see attachment1

I followed your instuctions, but I am still having problems. I am not sure if it is the installation of the chip or the backups I am trying to load. The backups I have tried dont boot, the strange thing is I can play a movie that I backed up just fine, and it is in dvd-rw format. I am using NERO 5.5 for the backing up of my games, with the pioneer A04.

You might want to try using another burning software. preferably Record Now Max, i provided a link on the attachment where you can get a fully functional demo. Some people say Nero has not worked for them so try Record Now Max. There is a good tutorial on the first thread of this forum on how to use it. Also remember to try a good quality blank media when making your first backups.

Well, finnally got it working. Must of been the way I was backing up the games. I guess i have to do some more research on that part of it. I will download Record Now and give that a shot.
Using Record now, is it necessary to patch anything to the game once the image is on the hard drive?

Thanks for you help

You only need to patch games if you don't have a mod chip. doesn't matter what software you are using to burn the games, since you have one already you don't have to worry about that anymore, Magic 3 will play even backup of imports so you won't have to patch a japanesse game if you want to play it on your US ps2,. If you got your games working and you are still using Nero then make sure you remember how you did it in case Record Now does not work for you. I use Record Now and I have had no errors or nonbootable games yet but you never know with different hardware and operating systems what might happen. Also remember the booting procedures for different game formats, if you want to switch from a ps1 backup to a Ps2 backup you need to follow the procedures listed in my last attachment3.

MOD Chip 3.0 vs 3.5

I have been reading posts for over a week and I recently ordered a MOD CHIP 3.5. I hope I have all the information I need to burn PS2s. The kids won't be opening their PS2 and games until Christmas so I haven't attemped the process YET.

My Question is: Is there going to be a difference in the attachments from the 3.0 and 3.5 Mod Chip procedures?

This isn't correct..... Patches are for more than just playing backups without a mod chip...

You have PAL-NTSC patches which will be required for you to be able to play a PAL game on your NTSC TV (or the game will play in black and white or it will roll)(unless you have a multi-system tv)
JAP games are in NTSC format anyway so you are correct about not having to patch them.
There are EA patches for EA games.....There are Translation Patches (ie.. to convert a JAP game to English speaking etc..)

The Magic 3 will play all games without patching but the main one is PAL games.... It will play them BUT they won't display correctly...

So the majority of the time, you are correct, no need to worry about patching, but there are certain times that patching comes in handy regardless of what chip you have...

What is a MOD CHIP 3.5?????

Or do you mean Magic 3.5?????

If you mean Magic 3.5... All it is, is the Magic 3 with a clip kit... Same boot procedures apply...

Why are you pressing eject in the first place???
You should be pressing RESET, not eject....

NOTE: This is with the disk assumed in the tray and the tray closed:

Playstation 2 Games

• Power up normally from STANDBY with RESET button. A single tap is required.

Playstation 1 games & DVD Movies

• Power up from STANDBY with RESET button held until the blue EJECT light comes on; then release RESET and the disk will boot.

NOTE: Turn off the PS2 (to standby) before changing Mode (PS1/PS2/DVD)

Try it this way and see if it works....

If yours doesn't boot that way then you don't have a "true" Magic 3.... Contact whoever you bought the chip from and find out EXACTLY what it is....

Try booting the movie from the "browser" screen.... When it comes up, just select the disc and see if it will boot....

Are the DVD Movies you are trying to boot from the SAME region as your PS2?

Magic 3

Thanks for the correction "BG", I did not mean to write that the only reason you need to patch a game is to play the backup of the game, I didnt' mean to be that general, hehe, I was refering just to the patches that allow you to play a backup without a mod chip, and I was also refering to the specific question that "fungiog" asked,

Quote: Using Record now, is it necessary to patch anything to the game once the image is on the hard drive?

For the purpose of just changing burning software you won't need to apply a patch to the game image on the hard drive. And you wont need to apply a patch to the game image that will allow you to play backups without mod chips since you have one regardless of what software you use. That's what I thought 'fungiog' was refering to, hehe,That's more specific and more clear I hope.
