It depends on how much you are willing to spend. The best modchip out costs about 45USD (x-ecutor2 lite). In a couple of weeks, there will a pro version of it for sale (x-ecutor2 pro), for about 55-60USD.
The next best modchip would be the xodus, which runs for about 60USD.

The one I have is the first version of x-ecutor. This one comes pre-flashed, so all you have to do is install it. Costs about 30USD. The Enigmah-X 2 is just as good and costs just as much.

Anything other than those are pretty bad (other than bio-XX, but I couldn't find a site, nor a price).

Your best bet it to get an x-ecutor 1 or enigmah-X chip if your looking for the cheapest (with good quality). But if you don't mind paying 15USD more, you should get the x-ecutor2 lite. It is preflashed, re-flashable, and has better bios.

I am really probably the worst person to modify my Xbox because I am terrible with these things. is there anything without soldier wires or anything that i can just place in? or maybe an external 1? if not then I might as well purchase the cheeper 1 that you mentioned, but do these mod chips alow you to boot linux? and is there any vcd feature included? oh yes and 1 more thing what kind of wire do I need to hook my xbox to my pc? and would it work to burn the games on mac? sorry for asking so many questions but i really can't speand much on it and I want a good 1 that will let me suse the features I have seen all over the net.

well I found the cheepest reasonable mod on the web, the address to get to where I found it is: http://www.gibsoft.com/detail.asp?prod_code=589. this mod cost 20$ and is very reliable (I have only read this I have no proof though)

Thats the one I have, and it's very reliable. It has 9 really easy soldering points (just have to fill the holes on the chip) and 1 hard soldering point.

There isn't any external chips, and there are 2 no-solder chips. One is the xodus, but you have to flash bios on it. The second is the x-ecutor2 lite, which cost 45USD (the nosolder feature won't be available until after new years).

From the looks of it, I'd say you live in the UK , and that chip is your best bet (unless you get the second version).

vcd.... Well, i don't think xbox can play vcd's, but one of the many talented 'xbox homebrew apps' coders made a program that plays media. The program is called "xbox media player (xbmp)" and you burn it onto a cd, with your video. It supports, mpg, divx, mpeg-2 and a bunch of others. Just as good as a VDC if you ask me, as long as you burn it to a re-writable.

And cable... I use a standered PC network cable. I dunno if you have a router or not, but it makes it easier to connect to your xbox.

I apologize for the stupid question, but what is flashing and what is bios? If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm very new at this. Also I've read about a chip called the matrix, does anyone know if it's any good?

The matrix was the code name for the "Xodus". It is very good, but you need to flash your own bios (that is for a PC, but does the same thing for xbox).

Some modchips don't have any bios on them (for legal reasons). So when you boot the xbox with the chip, it won't do anything untill you "flash" it, or burn the bios to the chip.

oh.. Well, i believe that price is in Euros, so it would cost about 30USD. Same as that other place I mentioned.
