Identifying DVD9

I have GT Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva with me and I noticed that there are two barcode rings around the center of the dvd. There's only one barcode ring for the other ps2 games I have. It also appears that dual layered dvd movie cds also have double barcode rings. Am I right in assuming that this is the "trademark" of the DVD9 format?

Oh, and why is it that when I put in a DVD9 disc into my pc dvdrom, it only shows around 4.3 gb capacity? is there no way to detect the size of a DVD9 disc?

yeah put it into your pc dvd drive and check the disc size

=<4.37Gb = single layer
>4.37Gb dual layer

to my knowledge they is only 1 ps2 game on dual layer media and that's Xenophage (sp??), all the rest is single layer

another alternative is run DVDdecryptor and go into ISO READ mode. It tells u whether the disc is single or dual layered

however i've just read that the chinese version of GT Concept is on dvd9. But even if this is correct it doesn't mean that your GT Concept is on DVD9. For example i deffinately know the Australian release of it isn't as i've done a backup of it.

Well, my GT concept 2002 is the original chinese version imported from china. Though when I put it in my drive, it only says 3.96 GB. So is this DVD5? or did these guys just decide to put a 4 gig game on a 9 gig DVD9 disc? (As far as I know, the Chinese version is supposed to be a DVD9 disc.)

Here's a shot of the box - if you need to verify if its the chinese version

Yes it is a dvd5. The use of a dvd9 media would be pointless considering the game doesnt take up enough space to even use all of the first layer.

ok, so which version of GT Concept is on a DVD9? And how would you tell by plainly looking at the underside of the DVD?

bighap it still could be on dual layer even though i agree with u - it would be pointless. But remember there are games on dvd that don't even take up a full cdr disc (640Mb).

Rengoku don't be lazy. Download dvddecrypter. using it to read the disc in ISO mode will tell u how many layers it has.

Ok, I downloaded DVDdecrypter and here's the result I got.

http://www.geocities.com/rengokutm/gtconceptDVD9.jpg
Copy the link above and paste it in the address bar to see it.

Looks like this is a DVD9 disc after all - check the red arrow on the picture - 2 layers!

Though DVDdecrypter says the disc size is around 8 GB (check the red arrow with the ? in the pic). Windows only detects the disc to be 3.96 GB - so is this a windows bug or is it just my DVD drive.

There is nothing wrong with your dvd drive because its reporting the correct size of the disc through DVD Decrypter....

I think this is the problem they are having with Xenosaga also (also DVD-9) in that the second layer cannot be picked up by Windows....

Try using DVD Decrypter to rip the ENTIRE disc to your hard drive and then see what size it is then. Maybe dvd decrypter can read ALL of the files and WRITE all of them to the hard drive. Although you would have to find (OR MAKE) a rip kit to get it to fit on 1 DVD-R....

Oh, I'm not trying to rip this game, I just wanted to know if it was dvd9 or not. Anyway, this game is definitely 8.5 GB! Damn, thats huuge for a racing game. What takes up so much space? How big is Xenosaga anyway?

Xenosaga is about the same size I believe....
You will probably find at a later date when DVD-9 is broken for the PS2 that ALOT of the size of that disc is "dummy files"... We'll just have to wait and see....

considering that other versions of GT Concept are on dvd5 media, your comment BG on 'dummy files' would seem right on target.

Now whats the go with this comment:
"Thats because there is no regular sized disc smaller than 640."

Maybe u misunderstood me or something. What i was getting at is that there are games that r on dvd media that quite easily could've been put onto cd media eg Ninja Assault.
