how to tell what ver. of ps2 i have

well was wanting to know how to check my ps2's(usa)
for the correct version ( i,e, v1 v2 v3 v4 and so on )
well please advise i'm looking to get v3magic

Look on the back of your PS2..... There is a label on the back with a number on it.....

The number starts with: SCPH-xxxxxx.....

We need that number and any other info thats on the label... Then we can tell you what version you have.....

Get a Messiah 2 instead of the Magic.....

also is there a reason messiah2 is better than magic3
new to the ps2 but was an old pro on ps1's
done my own chip programming and fitting
but been sitting back and waiting on a chip for the ps2
that did all and was'nt complicated to use it
i,e, dont need gameshark or patching games and so on
I do not have a dvd-burner yet need advise there too
and what software works best for the dvd version
and the cd format i tried cdrwin for a cd format ps2 and no luck
getting it to work
please advise on above

charlie, according to this site : http://www.psx-tech.com/Faq.htm

the first one is v.1 and the second is v.4, correct?

The second one won't be datecode 1A - it should be datecode 1D and hence a v4.

the date code is as stated is there another way to determine
with out opening it up
went to the link posted no screws in bay opening on 1st one
and it has 10 screws
the 2nd one has 8 screws and 2 screws visible in the bay opening
also on the link it noted magic3 wont go on the first release
at launch 010 bios well how do i check the bios version
on my first model
well please advise on both to confirm which mod i'll need to get
also what makes messiah2 better than magic 3
need all the info on both chips please

The problem with serpents site is that they are not breaking it down with the date code also..... Maybe Charlie_PS2 can give you some more technical stuff about it..... Take a look at this:

Yes... The Messiah 2 is DVD-9 capable.... Charlie_PS2 repoted that it boots DVD-9 100% of the time.....
