Safedisc 2 & Red Alert 2 -- Copied via Plextor :-)

makin a backup of my Red Alert 2 CD which has Safedisc 2 copy protection. I used the settings from Clony to set the Fast Error skip settings and used the Plextor 12/10/32A with Firmware 1.07 to read to a image, then burn back out.

I put the backup CDs in a 48X CDROM and it read the game and installed it all. I played the game for darn near 2 hours and it works fine, and restarted again, with no errors.

What has me scratchin my head is the Plextor supposedly only makes copies that has to be played in the same burner, with a firmware of 1.04. As you can tell from above, my firmware is 1.07 and it does install and play fine from a CDROM drive. So maybe a lot of the info on the web is incorrect, or maybe the fact that the CDROM is a 48X which means it is newer (6 months old) is hedging my results.

Just wanted to pass this along, and see if anyone else has seen anything like this with the Plextors. No need to respond if you do not own a Plextor 12/10/32A. Thanks.

Hi,
Yep, I had this dilemma, the firmware in my plex is 1.07 also, and after making a backup it would work in my plex - but also in my x32 teac on my other machine. So, I thought cool! Only to find that it didn't work in my another of my drives - a Sony, anyway I asked a friend to try it in his - a Samsung - Yuk! And it wouldn't work in his either or my brothers Ricoh writer. So my conclusion is that it will work in some other rom drives but not all of them, my advice would be to try to get a friend to try it in his - I'd be surprised if it worked okay in his as well, good luck.

here is some info from the MechWarrior 4 readme file:

SafeDisc Issues
The MechWarrior: Vengeance copy protection software is incompatible with some hardware and software components. This section provides details about these SafeDisc issues.

SafeDisc with Hardware
SafeDisc is incompatible with some CD-ROM drives, which include the following.
Acer CD-624a: The drive fails when used with real-mode drivers. To fix this, install protected-mode drivers.
Memorex CD-RW2224: The drive is incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.
Sanyo CRD-256P: The drive enters a not ready state after several attempts to start the game. This drive is incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.
Sony CDU77E: Early 1.0 firmware versions of this drive fail if configured as a slave on the IDE bus. The drive will work if reconfigured as a master.
Yamaha 2216E, 4416SX, and CDR6416S-VK: These drives are incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.

RedRogue, when your friend put the backup in his drive, did the autorun installation setup window come up and then when you clicked on Install it just sat there and you could hear the drive trying to spin up and making noises?? That is what the guy told me his drive was doing, and he also has a Ricoh burner and he tried it in his CDROM also.

Waitstate,

i did exactly like you, but only read the original red alert 2 with my plextor 40x UW drive, it works fine with other drives on different system
i don't use my burner system to play and test games out
other systems consists of many other drives, from Pioneer DVD 6x SCSI to Asus, Acer, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and other crappy drives thru my friends' systems.

They all work fine, i use clone cd to copy them, plextor 12x10x32 ide to write them back same bios updates as you, had fast skip on when read

I'm in a similar circumstance:

I read and burned "No one lives forever" via ClonCD 2852 in my plextor 161040a... and installed and played the game in a diferent drive other than plextor and works fine....
As I understand, (and as Safedisk analizer tells), the Nolf protection is safedisk v2.05.030....
Then....is plextor 16 a working drive with SD2 ???
