anyone used thermal paste on ps2?

I just chipped my V7 with magic2 (first time had problems, rewired it, changed 5v, 3.3v, and ground to the new spot) works great now except it locked up after about an hour I think if I used some good thermal paste instead of the thermal pad it might help. One thing though, the difference in thickness of the pad and paste too much? Anyone tried it? Will the Screws pull the heatsink flush with chip surface???
