Ps2 backup on dvdr won't work but other backups on cdr do?????

I'm desperatley looking for information. I can play backup games on my ps2 that are on cdr disks which have been ripped. Not by me unfortunatley! i'm not clever enough for that but my friend is!
Anyway they have backed up lord of the rings 2 but my ps2 won't acknowledge it at all. This is the first one they've tried. I do have the origianl. I don't know what chip is in my ps2 but i don't need a boot up disk and it plays all my ps1 backups too........ Any info would be great. Do i need a bootup disk to play dvdr backups that are done straight copy to copy??????????

PLEASE HELP!!!!! I'm also trying to find a program called Atlantis toolkit for ps2 backups..Anyone heard of this or got it or even tried it? I can't follow the dvd rip tutorials...Yeah i know "i must be thick" I thought maybe there was a program that could do it all for you like doing a dvd to vcd..They're easy compared to this
