It depends on what media you are using. If you are using a branded media i.e.: Verbatim, Traxdata, TDK etc... then it should be ok to burn at 2x. However if you are not using branded media then burn at 1x.
By the sounds of your problem, your computer is slowing down so much it is giving you a buffer under run error. On the software you are using (I would use Primo DVD) then check BURN-Proof in the options as the A04 does support this. If your computer is slowing down to the extent that you say it is then burn at 1x just to be safe. You mention trying to use your computer at the same time but it is too slow. If this is the case then don't use it. The burner will need all the system resources it can get and if you are using a program at the same time then you are taking some of its resources away which will cause it to error up if your computer is quite slow.
