Question Mafia exits after short time

hi there,

after starting mafia and playing the introduction or anything else, the game exits after a few seconds (20-60s) and switches back to the desktop. i´ve got no clue what the failure might be.

i seem to remeber that this error occured with the original cd as well.
anyway i tried all cracks from here.

Please help.

(i play the german version on win 98se, 1000 Mhz Athlon, Radeon 9000pro and 256 MB SD-Ram)

greets rüdiger

are there any init errors? or does it just go back to the desktop without anything?

there´s no written error. it just switches back to the desktop.
i cant believe, that the game needs some special codec, it would say so, doesn´t it?
by the way, the avi´files are playing normal, but after the switch from intro avi to game sequences (in the cafe) it exits after a few seconds. it´s realy strange.

anyway, thanks for help

Gruß

Rüdiger

Well, it looks like it's a graphics driver problem. The moment you switch to 3D graphics, it goes wrong. It also goes wrong without any crack applied, so it's something with the game itself. Mentioning an ATI card really makes a driver problem even more likely (so was my experience the last few years anyway), so try some different drivers. Remember : the latest drivers are not necessarily the best.

My pc:
Windows XP-Home edition, AMD Athlon 2100+, Gigabyte 7VA/KT400 mobo, Geforce 4 ti 4200 128Mb, 80Gb 7200 rpm hard disk, AOpen cd-rw 40x12x48, Liteon dvd-rom and 512Mb DDR-Ram pc2700... all the latest drivers and still not working.

So downgrading to older drivers?

probably.

i´ve got the latest graphic drivers for my ati radeon 9000 as well.
i think, the game is not very safe programmed (new graphic engine), so it´s unstable and very sensible to computer configurations.

It helps if you mention which version drivers you've got. If it's 4x.xx, go to a 30.82 or 30.88 driver, the 4x.xx series have lots of problems

Have you tried with the originals without any crack ? If it's the crack that's the problem, they should work this way.

I'm answering to Uncle KoolAid, not ruedibaer. Uncle KoolAid says he has the same problem but without some basic tests like using the original cd it is absolutely not guaranteed that they do indeed have the same cause. If you want to take this over and provide Uncle KoolAid a solution yourself then go right ahead, otherwise keep your criticisms to yourself.

My point is that I'm dealing with Uncle KoolAid's problem. He has the same symptoms but he suspects the crack itself. It's unlikely, but that's why I suggested he made the one check you can do to see if it's the crack : using the original. It may be that it's all the same as with ruedibaer, which I admit looks like a game support problem not for this forum, but I've learned long ago that the same symptoms can be from different causes. That's why I asked him to check his originals, if they didn't work either I would be the first to suggest he seek help on the game's support forums.

Anyway, Uncle KoolAid if you're reading this, try the originals, but if they don't work either, you'll have to get on the developer's support forum since we only deal with crack problems here, ok ?
