I recently ran into this with my DVD drive, after refprmatting it was still dead.
There are a ton of burners out there cheap, not cheap burners good burners at and in expensive price and some with rebates that put them under $50.00. Shop around and pick the one you want, I have even seen some DVD burners for around $200.00.
