Safedisc version?

I used ClonyXXL and it says the disk I am trying to duplicate is using SafeDisk v2.0.

I downloaded one of the safedisc unwrapper tools, but when I run it I'm told that nothing is protected with safedisk!

I do believe it is protected though because I get continual read errors when I try to make an .iso.

Is there a way to verify what ClonyXXL is telling me?

Get Safedisk Analyser to check the exe for Safedisk protection. What game are you talking about?

Are you using Bool's Eye's Safedisk 2 Cleaner?
Are you selecting the correct file to unwrap?

Thanks for the reply.

The program isn't a game, it's a financial program that supposedly uses Safedisk protection.

I haven't tried Bool's Eye's Safedisk 2 Cleaner yet.

I tried all the .exe and .dll files (there were only about 10) and I got the same error message that nothing is protected with safedisc.

I tried Safedisc Analyser but I don't see any .icd files on the CD.

Try scanning the cd with another program other than Clony - such as YaPS or Scout

Are the read errors from sectors 800-10000? Or 800-1500?

Use Clone CD to try to copy

One thing is for sure: If Safedisc Analyser is looking for an .icd file and there is none, the "thing" we are talking about is neither sd1 protected nor sd2.

I think clonyxxl found an "indicating" file on the cd (such as one of the tmp files) and thinks it is sd2.

Thanks for the tool tips. I downloaded all of the tools you recommended. When I run Scout it tells me copy protection is SafeDisk (old), when I run Yaps it tells me protection is none/unknown.

When I tried using Winimage to make an .iso (which started me on this journey since I couldn't successfully make an .iso) it told me there were read errors but it didn't tell me from what sectors. Is there a way to find what sectors have the read errors?

I'm not even positive anymore this disk is protected but something isn't right with it!

I have successfully created a copy of the CD using ClonyXXL and CloneCD. Is there a way to verify the copy is an EXACT duplicate of the original CD?

Even if it sounds a little bit simplistic: If is protected but the backup works perfect, you have done a 1:1 copy.

ClonyXXL provides a feature to scan for read errors.

Perhaps I'm being a little bit anal (okay, I'm being a LOT anal!!!!).

Here's what started the whole thing. Even though I couldn't successfully make an .iso I was able to make a copy using ClonyXXL and CloneCD.

After I made the copy I tried making an .iso of the original and the copy. Here's what I found: the .iso of the original created a file that was 1,500,000 bytes approximately, the .iso of the copy created a file that was 262,000 bytes approximately.

Neither .iso is good due to read errors and is just a fraction of the size it "should" be if the .iso was created properly.

My question is, if the copy is an exact duplicate why are the .iso files different sizes?

Well, one question again, does the clonecd backup work?

If yes, the crap "code" in the .iso you made from the original is due to bad sectors on the original, which have not been copied.

It is not true 1:1 copy, but if it works, the original doesn't check for the existence of bad sectors on the cd.

Btw, are you sure you gave the size correctly.
1,500,000 Bytes? That almost can be stored on floppy??

Yes, the clonecd backup appears to work. I'm just trying to understand how this all works since I'm brand new to it!

Cd-writers are generally better at reading the "protection" on the disk. From the occurance of these bad sectors it is Safedisk. And as Scout detected it as Safedisk 1 that's pretty much confirmed it.

With regards to the iso size again. The new filesize you quoted is still unusual as 1,638,400 bytes is still just over a floppy disk (it's around 1.6 Mb)

I suggest making the iso images again using the same reader - preferably the cd-writer, and then see if the images from either disk are the same.
But saying you seem to have made a 1:1 copy with Clone CD - be happy

I took your suggestion and made the .iso images again using the CD writer with the original and the copy. Same file sizes as before.

The error I get with winimage is "floppy error 23 Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" in case that means anything to you!

Is there a program that can verify the copy is an exact duplicate of the original. I'm just concerned having an error pop up down the road about needing the original CD or something!

One other thing that is strange (to me anyway). Using the CD writer, ClonyXXL reported the original CD with 574 (approximately) bad sectors and the copied CD with 54 bad sectors.
