Yes I have heard of this. I have never researched it fully but I know about this first hand.
When a PS2 is vertical (something not sure if it is the laser or not) does make contact with the disc. It is known that the laser does get closer to the disc in this position and is recommended when people are having problems with their horizontal PS2's reading discs. If your ps2 can read discs fine in the horizontal position then I would say leave it flat. Or you could just get some finishing car polish (not wax) and a soft cloth, to buff your discs back to new. I do this on occasion, primarily with rental games. Makes them look new and most scratches dissapear. Tyler!
