Win XP and Games Problems.
Folks, I'm getting random re-boots using Win XP. My machine is new and the only items that I have added are:
1) MOHAA. 2) SOF2. Including the "No CD" cracks, I also updated SOF2 to version 1.01. Updated Detonator drivers to 29.42. Has anyone else experienced the random re-boot problem, after installing any of the above? I'm discounting the Detonator drivers because a friend is using the 30.30 frivers and he gets the same problem: So I'm guessing it's the games or the cracks. Anyone got any other ideas? Miko200. |

if you've got a via chipset (like me), that's what's probably causing the problem. windowsxp doesn't like a certain combination. solution: get win98.
btw, i have both those games, and it only stuffs up on medal of honour. |

Winupdate
Have you tried Winupdate. There are a lot of fixes/service packs that might help...... I have both games running perfectly on my XP Pro on an Intel chipset, PIII 1GHz, 512MB, ASUS V7700 GF2 video.

Thanks for replying folks.
1) I actually perfer Win XP over '98 so changing back is out. 2) I'll check for Bios update. 3) All Win updates have been completed as they come out. Thanks again for the input. Mick. |

Reboots with WinXP and MOHAA and SOF2
I have WinXP with MOHAA and via chipsets on Gigabyte motherboard. Don't have SOF2 installed. No problems Installed MOHAA and cleaned game.exe with safedisk cleaner myself to get noCD game exe. I use WinXP default support for my via chip motherboard. Supports motherboard and on board sound OK. Stay with WinXP over Win98. May be slightly slower on some games than Win98 it is reported but more stable than Win98

Sorry for bringing this up again but: It looks like it was "driver related." And NOT the game or patches as I originally thought.
The problem file looks like it is nv4_sisp. Wil roll back the detonator drivers and see what happens, Mick. |

You have the "infinite loop" problem
Check this site if you have a AMD and VIA chip http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=64

First of all, if you have a Via chipset, don't update it's drivers. The ones supplied with XP are extremely stable, and have yet to be outdone. As far as reboots, right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Advanced Tab and then the settings button under Startup and Recovery. Unselect Automatically Restart from the window and close. That should fix your problem. Keep in mind that the system restarts due to a system failure. This could range anywhere to a missing txt file to a corrupted wav to a virus.... so it's not always a crucial situation. Write back with results.
P.S: Have you gotten all the crucial updates(and drivers) from www.windowsupdate.com? Might be a good idea

The Nvidia's Detonator XP 30.82 driver is out now, was just released yesterday.
I also gets random reboots playing Civilization 3 and sometimes with MOHAA, and I do use the VIA 4 in 1 drivers. |

Well I rolled back the Detonator drivers to the 21.83 (came with the card) and so far have had no problems. I kept the updated Via-4-in-1 drivers. So I'm now keeping my fingers crossed.
I'll download the NEW Det drivers 30.92, as per above post from Buchankas. I can always roll back if things go wrong again. Mik0200 |

Hello to all in these forums,
I am new to this site, and have just registered for posting. In response to your spont. reboots, I have seen this mentioned in every type of forum that I belong to; It is not just a AMD problem, or a VIA chipset problem. It is happening with Intel, SIS, ALI and VIa together, regardless of mobo or processor. I was having the same problem under intense cpu load but usually when incoding/decoding .vob files. HEat was not an issue, and I am fairly certain that drivers are not the issue (of any type) I build a lot of computers, and am very familiar with the hardware. One item that I reset in WinXP under Administrative tools was to disable the IMAPI burning CD client, and my reboots have stopped. The native burning program was written by Roxio (Adaptec) for MSoft, and it seems to interfere with other aftermarket burning, and other video/audio programs. This may sound strange, because most people are not "using" their burner when this happens, but it works (for me) This is a MS issue, not a hardware issue. With so many resident/native programs running in the background, this lays a fertile area for conflicts. Check your Events schedule in Ad. tools for the errors that occured at the time of the reboot; they are all system conflicts. By just disabling the auto restart feature, you will be inviting the old Win98 lockups, in which case, ;you will have to reboot and the chkdisc will run. Hope this helps, Phil PS I am very new to this game protection stuff, and am basically making a lot of frizbies for discs. If someone can get me started, I would sure appreciate it. |
