Verbatims and Mitsui are way more expensive than other DVD-Rs but they do have a reflectivity value that is within the formal DVD spec (45% to 85%). This means that the PS2 laser calibrated normally and functioning properly is able to read the properly burned DVD-R as if it were a pressed disk (more or less). The cheaper unbranded DVD-Rs have reflectivity outside the DVD spec (like 25% to 40%) and thus need tip top lasers to read them - like in the v5s or brand new v4 laser replacements. You would use General not Authoring.
