This has to be your call. We've chipped quite a few V3s (that's what you've got if there are 10 screws on the bottom including the rubber pads) - otherwise it's a v4.
In all the v3s we've had to recalibrate the laser and in one case replace it. On the other hand, if you can afford it and can get a v5.x, then you will have a much better PS2 for the Messiah because that version is the best yet. Did you contact JD13 or JD14 (he uses different names on different forums)?
