would DVD-R games damage v3 PAL PS2 Laser?

my pal PS2 is early model 30002 PAL machine,
if i play the DVD-R games would it damage the laser and wear it out later?
and i heard ps2 30002 PAL have weak laser, is this true??

psx_paul 17-06-2002 07:12

what mod have you got in your PAL v3 ?

toongaz 17-06-2002 10:01

i have neo2 at the moment.. please help

psx_paul 17-06-2002 10:15

your neo2 chip will damage the laser in time

not sure about the dvd-r's, someone techy like charlie or arakon can no doubt answer that for you...

charlie_ps2 17-06-2002 10:52

DVD-Rs won't damage your laser if they are expensive branded DVD-Rs.

Let me explain.

The DVD spec says reflectivity of the DVD must be in the range 45% to 65%. Typically DVD-Rs have reflectivity in the range 15% to 40% - rather lower. So if the DVD-R is poorly burned, then the laser will have to work harder on re-reads. Now that doesn't amount to a serious overload unless you play DVD-Rs all day.

My advice is at your risk, of course.

charlie - could toongaz remove his neo chip and replace it with a messiah without causing any problems to his machine (PAL v3)? I remember you saying something about this in the past, something to do with how much damage the chip has done to the laser.

Just a suggestion for toongaz...

Paul, in a word, YES.

Hey charlie, what brand of dvdr's would you recommend using that would be in the ideal range and how expensive are they? Thanks

I use Princos - I don't know their reflectivity value as Princo don't publish the info. They are cheap < £2 or $3

Mitsui DVD-Rs have a reflectivity of 50% and cost more than double that.

The spec says that reflectivity should lie in the range 45% to 85%. DVD-Rs below 45% will present problems to the PS2 laser if it is slightly / rather weak.

My modchip shop tells me their chips don't harm the laser , take a look see under heading "MODCHIPS">
http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/labworld/mod2/index2.html

Their "Premium" chip is a neo 2.2 , "Godzilla" is a starchip and not sure what their "Detonator" is (Messiah maybe?) . Says about thier chiptypes in their old site under heading "Products&Prices">
http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/labworld/index2.html

I want to play backup dvd-r's too toongaz but I will spew if a new console is neccessary:mad:

charlie_ps2 19-06-2002 16:41

Their site is plain wrong. The NEO4 is not a true non-swap solution.

They've got the point about VCDs wrong - there's no software to play them!

If you go for anything, take the Messiah - it's the only one guaranteed to do the job without harming your PS2. I hope they know how to install. Get references.

Look up JD13 (or JD14) on this forum and ask him if he used these people.

toongaz 20-06-2002 10:50

I just found out the place that they do messiah on my V3 PS2
