To recognize what version of ps2 you've got take a look at this:

[USA] PS2 NTSC
30001 v1-3 = 10 Screws on back
30001 v4 = 8 Screws on back
30001R v4 = 8 Screws on back
30001R v5 = 8 Screws on back

Serial # (x -> U = USA, A = Australia, E = Europe)
x1: v1 with 10 screws
x0: v2 with 10 screws
x0 with 8 screws the PS2 is v4
x2: v3 with 10 screws
x3/x4/x5/x6: v4 with 8 screws

The games for ps2 can be both on CD and DVD, CD games have violet back surface, DVD have silver back surface...
