To recognize what version of ps2 you've got take a look at this:

[USA] PS2 NTSC
30001 v1-3 = 10 Screws on back
30001 v4 = 8 Screws on back
30001R v4 = 8 Screws on back
30001R v5 = 8 Screws on back

Serial # (x -> U = USA, A = Australia, E = Europe)
x1: v1 with 10 screws
x0: v2 with 10 screws
x0 with 8 screws the PS2 is v4
x2: v3 with 10 screws
x3/x4/x5/x6: v4 with 8 screws

The games for ps2 can be both on CD and DVD, CD games have violet back surface, DVD have silver back surface...

To get a messiah mail dust2dust or ps2_charlie :D

suggesstion - Can a moderator post a permanent thread (which is locked to prevent it getting out of hand), that lists PS2 models and how to recognise them. There have been several posts lately asking “what version do I have?”

I am really sorry if i am asking some newbie questions. I look at the back and i don't see any screws. I see a date code:2A I also see a model number SCPH 3001R and a serial number that starts with U.

Remove the expansion bay cover, Along the top edge you will see a bracket containing 2 or 3 screws. If you only see 2 screws then you have a v4. If you have 3 then its a v5.
