If I'm not mistaken, this serial number or whatever is the four bytes at offset 0x01B8 in the Master Boot Record; you can change it with a disk editor. (That was the only obstacle of copying my properly set up Windows XP to my PC at work, file by file, and then make it work... Took two hours to find out.)

What are you doing anyway? Moving Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 manually to another hard disk or PC, imaging/restoring stuff with Norton/Symantec Ghost or similar?

It can be. Just think xbox. Then xbox live. Add that all bans on xbox-live are based on HDD key. That one can be changed and bam, xbox no longer banned...

How to do it, well I have no idea. Google or something.

if we are talking about the serial number which is printed on the HDD itself, then i don't think it's possible to change that. if it would be possible, the HDD manufacturers wouldn't be able to rely on that number for identification and RMA procedure purposes..
