How to change the Hard Disk Serial Number?
who can help me
which software can do this! |
errr why?
|
If I'm not mistaken, this serial number or whatever is the four bytes at offset 0x01B8 in the Master Boot Record; you can change it with a disk editor. (That was the only obstacle of copying my properly set up Windows XP to my PC at work, file by file, and then make it work... ;) Took two hours to find out.)
What are you doing anyway? Moving Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 manually to another hard disk or PC, imaging/restoring stuff with Norton/Symantec Ghost or similar? |
Hard disk serial number is hard coded, it cannot be changed.

How to do it, well I have no idea. Google or something. |
if we are talking about the serial number which is printed on the HDD itself, then i don't think it's possible to change that. if it would be possible, the HDD manufacturers wouldn't be able to rely on that number for identification and RMA procedure purposes..

have fun.................. |
hdd serial which you see at the top of screen when doing
a dir /w etc.. is stored in the mbr as discussed earlier (easily changed with a diskeditor like hex workshop (www.bpsoft.com) ... the harddisk serial set by the manufacturer cant be changed... |
The DIR command shows the serial number stored inside the file system (whichever file system has such a feature, not all of them do) of a partition; if has nothing to do with either the serial number in the MBR or the hardware serial number of the physical device.
