How to change the Hard Disk Serial Number?

DABhand 07-07-2006 09:27

errr why?

Joe Forster/STA 07-07-2006 09:32

If I'm not mistaken, this serial number or whatever is the four bytes at offset 0x01B8 in the Master Boot Record; you can change it with a disk editor. (That was the only obstacle of copying my properly set up Windows XP to my PC at work, file by file, and then make it work... ;) Took two hours to find out.)

What are you doing anyway? Moving Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 manually to another hard disk or PC, imaging/restoring stuff with Norton/Symantec Ghost or similar?

Hard disk serial number is hard coded, it cannot be changed.

It can be. Just think xbox. Then xbox live. Add that all bans on xbox-live are based on HDD key. That one can be changed and bam, xbox no longer banned... ;)

How to do it, well I have no idea. Google or something.

if we are talking about the serial number which is printed on the HDD itself, then i don't think it's possible to change that. if it would be possible, the HDD manufacturers wouldn't be able to rely on that number for identification and RMA procedure purposes..

hi, sorry, my english is a little short to explain correctly, but probably you anderstand my explanation, serial number of hardrive can only changed from manufacterer with a firmware special update, but probably you would not changing the serial number! but the HDD ID, many online buy gamez use the HDD ID to generate a only one computer serial number for the buyed game and probably you search to play the online buy game from a friend to play by you with same serial. You can change the HDD ID by creating a ***.bat file or a ***.cmd file with correct ms-dos command. some ouares groups have already used this methode to crack some software, i dont know more, search to found some from their releaze to have an exemple and make your own.
have fun..................

hdd serial which you see at the top of screen when doing
a dir /w etc.. is stored in the mbr as discussed earlier (easily changed with a diskeditor like hex workshop (www.bpsoft.com) ... the harddisk serial set by the manufacturer cant be changed...

Joe Forster/STA 10-07-2006 05:26

The DIR command shows the serial number stored inside the file system (whichever file system has such a feature, not all of them do) of a partition; if has nothing to do with either the serial number in the MBR or the hardware serial number of the physical device.

Okay, time to close this thread. Buying one copy of a game and trying to play with it on multiple computers is illegal.
