It will do that (buildings, units die) for any (newer) EA game when you use a crack that wasn't designed for your region. (ex. Crack for US on German) Also, corrupt or missing registry data. It's EA's way of making sure you don't fsk with their games. S And yes you can use an incorrect CD-key. If you've tampered with the registry to change your key (why I don't know) then that will happen. So in conclusion: either find a crack made specifically for your version or use daemon tools.

the same 'problem' was in command and conquer generals, (i know for a fact, i had to trace it and fix it).. it can be 'triggered' by numerous things, such as ...
a blacklisted cd key a 'silent' cdcheck failing regional check not 'fitting' the region of the pc (tho this was not enabled in c&c:g) it is definately in the executable code, and not just some 'weird' problem with video drivers etc... it IS deliberate
