DVD-R Dual layer for Ps2 backups. Any Success?
I noticed that DVD-R dual layer discs have appeared , it seems that at the moment verbatim are the only company making them. Has anyone tried using them to make a back up of a dual layer playstation 2 game original?
I was thinking this may have a better chance of working on older playstations that may have had trouble with DVD+R discs. I have the first messiah chip in my machine and its a few years old , i might try one of these DVD-R dual layer discs to see if it works , would i be right in saying that you need to patch the ISO with the toxic patcher in the same way as a dual layer DVD+R disc? To this point i havent tried making a back up with dual layer media because i thought my machine may not read the DVD+R discs properly . I know my machine could not boot the original copy of the game God of War , so i could be in trouble wether i use DVD+R dual layer or even the new dual layer DVD-R version. I've got a backup of GT4 and GOW on Verbatim DL media . Both are patched and run perfectly on my v10 consoles. I think the problem your going to have is that the OLD PS2 wont read + media. If it wont read the original i cant see it reading DL+ media.

Yeah chances are that it wont read dual layer + media.
But have you tried any dual layer backups on the minus media yet from verbatim? The main idea i had was that if i used a back-up on dual layer minus media it may have a better chance of working than the original because the laser is struggling at the boot/protection part of the original disc. Would i be correct in saying that it would by pass this on the backup copy because thats when the modchip kicks in to replace this missing part on the backup? I could be wrong about this completly , i just remembered reading this somewhere in the Ultimate Sticky on this forum about the structure of a backup disc on Ps2 and how the older machines can struggle booting even the original dual layer discs. |

I havent tried -DL media yet. The older PS2's have trouble reading the second layer of the original so my thinking is it would be the same with the backup.

Do most of the older PS2 machines not experience trouble when actually trying to boot the disc at the beginning ? This seems to be the case on the original disc with mine. Do you think fitting a new laser to my machine would be a cure for the problem , or does the fact that its an older machine rule out a laser swap being effective?
One other thing was i right about the boot/protection part of the disc being left out on the backup copy? |

The problem with burning DL games is the PTP write strategies used on the second layer. What version is the console?? Are you having problems loading dvd-r backups and originals or just DL games?? Also, what version is the console??
