LUFCFan, youre a legend mate. i scratched away around the pin stub and got a decent enough solder joint, and then found that my G and I points were the wrong way round ! its up and running like a nut now

it could well have been that, infact it was probably later. im kind of a nocturnal guy, sometimes i find myself with my body clock completely reversed to reality.
