It could technically may have an alternative similar to SF by checking a certain file for activation rights. Its possible the SF programmers have come up with something for this kind of thing?

There have been a number of downloadable game demos released protected with Starforce, Still Life is one of them, so you actually don't need a CD/DVD drive to have Starforce protected games! Look at Macrovision and their SafeCast licensing system where you just need a code to activate the software after installing, PlexTools Pro XL is an example of that, and Starforce can be made to do the same thing!

Well I'd rather be likened to a student than a schoolkid, the majority of schoolkids are a waste of space these days, but I digress!

Checkout the Still Life website, it's the same people that made Syberia 1 & 2:

Maybe legally downloaded games have no typical SF prot at all, but it have SF. It is called ProActive, the SF engine for non disc checking. Only disc check from sector disappear, but it is SF definetively.

Very cool! I currently play the Adventure-Game "Post Mortem". You have to play the private-detective named Gustav McPherson. And in this new Adventure, he will be back !!! I will buy this game. Release date in germany is 18th April 2005.

How to re-enable your CD/DVD Drive in XP

Here's how u do it (No comment's on software from me).
Left click Start / Control panel/ then when Control panel box / Window opens, Scroll down if nesessary, and select System / Hardware Tab /Device Manager and select DVD/CD rom drives.
If any of these has a red X , then it is disabled , Simply right click and select"Enable" to re-enable the hardware device...

Sorry (Last post)

Sorry about my last post (Didn't see you were already in Device Manager), Try checking your BIOS settings and resetting the drive(s) from there.
And if this doesn't work, Open up the case and check the IDE connections.

Starforce seems to have many weird & wonderful ways of Fu**ing up your Hard / Software. Thank god for little toolz like SF nightmare / Cleaner- (Even if re-enabling cd drive's in software tend's to crash XP).
