Just make him activate the game with your account details and you'll be able to play the game.

After he does that, log on with your account details and there shall be no need for activation (I did that after formatting the HDD.)

Make sure that you both DO NOT log on at the same time at Steam, or you'll be both banned, along with the legit CD-Key.

Well the problem is, when his buddy has activated HL2 and logged out, can he download the needed files from steam to play? Or must he first install from the cd and can then play?

a bit of jet-lag this time, my friend will activate HL2 for me tomorrow

I'm afraid of the problem that Mr.munsterbuster have said as above.

sure my friend can activate HL2 for me, but don't know if I can play with my computer.

if I bought a HL2 retail version, will it be playable only with disk inserted? or I could D/L it via internet?
