doom 3 keeps freezing up

i've installed doom 3 and updated it to 1.1
everything starts out fine but after a few minutes playing the game just freezes on me. i am able to press ctrl-alt-del to end the game, so my computer didn't freeze just the game.
can anyone help me?

i have a 3 ghz intel penium 4 processor and an ati radeon 9800 pro
512 ddr ram

tried with original .exe file?

Your hardware seems more than adequate so I would try uninstall and reinstall and try it before you update it to 1.1
