might be a bit drastic but it seem like the only way to sort this out is a complete reboot of your system (did you get a recovery disk when you got the system ?) might help to speed up your system a bit as well

yeah its looking like i will have to do that
i haven't formatted before using xp
presumably i'm gonna lose all the stuff i have downloaded
although i might put in another burner to try to save the things i have got
btw my current burner isnt even writing cds now
