OK, I will do. My old games (FIFA 2004) still go on and work perfectly with the new NA settings, but the Hardware Online Arena which comes with the new Network Access Disc doesn't want to play ball unless the chip is disabled. I'll make a backup and retry.
I suspect it may be the disc, as it crashes when you try and test the NA settings, and it did arrive very dirty from Sony  So, I'll make a backup and let you guys know... LUFCfan

Very strange guys - original disc now connects and plays fine with Messiah 2 ON. I don't know what causes this, but the most the server seems to be able to handle 153 users. When 99 were on (just now, it let me on first time). So, it's good news - DNAS isn't getting clever at all........ well, not just yet anyway
