Your using cheap media. Backup ONLY to Ritek G04 Dye DVD's.

Also, no solder modchip their not very good to be honest, e.g. swap tricks, you will ruining your laser fast with this method.

Same with bad media, ruins your laser.

He's using Taiyo Yuden dvd-r's so i dont think media is the problem. Its a old PS2 that didnt have a very good laser even when it was new lol. I would sell it and get newer model to use the HD on. Like a v7 thru v10

Swap tricks don't ruin the laser at all bud, if u do the "knife trick" it'l ruin your drive mechanism. Others such as the nosolder modchip doesn't do anything apart from eject ur drive!

Wrong

No solders put a lot of strain on the electronics in the PS2, I have even seen them blow out fuses in a few PS2's first hand.
