extract them right where they are already, Doom 3/base
just need winrar, right click and select 'extract here'
obviously you'll need to delete, or move the pakxxx.pk4 files from the base directory or the game will just use them as normal

does it work? well the game still works and doesnt complain. theoretically it should make level loading quicker as the files are already extracted so it saves processor activity on extracting them as they're needed. however in practice i didnt notice much difference. perhaps only a few seconds.

one problem (i've heard this but not tried it myself) is that this doesnt work for multiplayer. you'll need to move the pakxxx.pk4 files back. this could be bogus info

well I extraded and in the same folder, (i guessed that it was so) and test it, it starts run, I not testing to start any campagn, should test multi player and report soon!

I started a multi player LAN server and it works with out problem! however you had to uncheck the thing that it ask for. It will report error bla bla bla your server dose not support this mode, then go to setting and uncheck it then it will works! Played fine (alone) for a day or 2 :P (or 1-2 minutes) :P anyone needs image to bee proved?

DUDES! OMFG!! Do not extract the files. They are only used when the game is LOADING, and if you do extract then your load times will be LONGER, but it will not fix your framerate or fix any stuttering!

Only the first load of each new level takes a while to start! But after that it only takes seconds to reload the level! About the same as when they were packed! Seems to give me a slight improvement.
I do think its faster all round though

i dont rlly think its worth the 2 extra gigs ive been running at 1024x768 with high detail with just the mem tweak and it runs smooth as a vanilla smoothie lol
