How do I burn a DVD to play like a VCD?

I get AVI is unsupported message when I try to convert the file I'm talking about.

I also have some Divx files I would like to burn to a DVD, aren't those alraedy in DVD format? Anyway Ulaed DVD movie factory 2 gives me a message that the avi is not accessable and tmpg decoder says avi is unsupported. The Divx video clip file plays fine with windows media player so I know its got to be a good file but how in the heck am I going to burn it so I can watch it on TV...
