Leave the laser alone unless it doesn't work for some media after you get the Magic in.
To desolder, use desoldering braid. DO NOT attempt to do it by hand, or suck it up with a bulb. Just get some braid. It's cheap and well worth it. Don't leave solder blobs on the board. Yes, you have to run the wire all the way to the back. Don't forget to scrape off the plastic coating on any recessed points or VIA's. Where to mount the chip? I usually mount on the outside of the hard drive cage ("expansion bay" for those who insist on using Sony's nomenclature). - Gurm
