Removing Neo 2.2 / Installing Magic 3.1 /PS 2 V3

I'm going to change my Neo 2.2 within the next days and would like to know some things before I start:

>do I have to pay attention to anything in specific when removing the Neo 2.2, it should be installed with 8 cables, right?

>after installing the Magic 3.1, do I have to adjust anything with the laser? I'm asking 'cause when I came across a site that showed how to install a Neo 2.2, there was something about adjusting the laser, too?

>I have a detailed image of how to solder the Magic 3.1 points, but one of the 22 solder points is shown on the bottom site of the PS 2 mainboard, do I have to take a very long cable and solder that from the top side where the chip is located to the bottom side?

>is there a min/max length for the cables I use to solder the chip?

>do I have to fix the chip to somewhere after having it soldered in?

>is there anything else important I should know?

Thanks for your help in advance

hold the wire and tip the solder with the iron it shuold come away easy and cleen off all lose solder with a solder suck or wick and use a little heat as you can
if you don't know what you are doing with the lazer you can kill it
very quick so don't mess you should look at charlie_ps2s
sticky laser+media

Leave the laser alone unless it doesn't work for some media after you get the Magic in.

To desolder, use desoldering braid. DO NOT attempt to do it by hand, or suck it up with a bulb. Just get some braid. It's cheap and well worth it. Don't leave solder blobs on the board.

Yes, you have to run the wire all the way to the back. Don't forget to scrape off the plastic coating on any recessed points or VIA's.

Where to mount the chip? I usually mount on the outside of the hard drive cage ("expansion bay" for those who insist on using Sony's nomenclature).

k, thx.

In a couple of hours a friend will come over to solder the chip in, I'll post again then whether it has worked or not.

I'm just trying to get the motherboard out but I don't know how. I got the case open detached all the cables, but somehow there seem to be a lotta cables attached to the bottom side.

Do I have to take the 3 golden screws out as well, cause when I try to lift the mainboard it seems like the passive cooler unit and everything is still attached to the board?

I can see the Neo 2.2 and everything but for soldering the Magic 3.1 the diagram shows one solder point on the bottom, can anyone please tell me how to get to that bottom side?

Or maybe someone knows a site where I can have a detailed describtion of how to install the Magic 3 or how to get that mainboard out of a V3 console?

Take out all the screws.

There are two metal layers, the motherboard is wedged between them, and the top layer snaps onto the DVD drive.

Undo ALL the screws.

Mhh, I still don't have the motherboard off. I undid all the screws like you told me. I can see the top of the motherboard, where I have detached all the cables and where the Neo 2.2 is still soldered to. As far as I know, I only have to get the board out so that I can solder the "S" point for the Magic 3.1, maybe there's an alternative solder point on the top?

If not:

the only screws left are 4 golden ones on the motherboard, they are fixed pretty tight so I have to wait for my buddy to come over to my place with a better screwdriver.

But let me ask this before he's there, will those 4 screws be all? My PS 2 is now lying on its top, will I have to turn it again and remove the top case as well? What will I have to detach then to get my motherboard out?

Dude, yeah. You have to take the WHOLE DARN THING apart.

You didn't follow the disassembly guides, did you?

Every screw has to come out, the top and bottom BOTH come off.

The entire darn thing comes apart in about 20 pieces.

I know, it's scary - but trust me, you just have to take ALL the screws out and EVERYTHING apart.

You don't want to solder to that board while it's in the case, anyway...

And why would the PS2 be on its top? You'd be seeing the BOTTOM of the motherboard in that case, now wouldn't you?

I couldn't find a detailed disassembly guide for a V3 PAL PS 2, and trust me I've been looking a lot.

Bout that bottom thing: how'd I know but I guess you're right, I just didn't imagine that the Neo was soldered to the bottom. Well, so much for the trouble of getting to that "S" point...

But a good disassembly guide would be very helpful, could you get me a link please?

got that mutha open now, but it'd be better if you could give me a guide for re-assembeling my PS 2 ;)

I found these two Disassemble guide for ver. 3 , I hope this helps.

thx a lot, this sure will help getting it back togehter.

can anyone who has ever soldered that chip into a v3 console tell me whether there is any trick to solder I H G & D C B ? Are there any alternatives?

How do you solder those points is there any special technique? You can't by any chance put IHG as one point and DCB as one?

EDIT: we stopped trying to solder the chip in, a few hours ago. Though the friend who was doing the soldering has some experience in this, he couldn't get the wires attached to points I H G D C B, all other points could be soldered fine. I'll ask someone else about soldering the rest, thanks for the support so far yall.

If you post a link to the diagram you're using I could perhaps be more helpful.

Ahh yes, the "multiple adjacent pins on the CD/DVD controller chip" issue.

There are VIA's on the back of the board that correspond to these pins/legs. Which ones?

Fire up your continuity tester (you DO have a multimeter handy, yeah?) and find out...

Similar points are marked on other diagrams. I'd just find a better diagram for your chip. Look around on the popular sites, unless someone else has one offhand (I don't for a V3).
