It was primarliy early ps2 games that were on a cd. Almost all new games are on dvd now. CD games are the ones that have a blue bottom and say cd-rom instead of dvd-rom on the disc and box. You really need a dvd burner to fully enjoy the ps2 backup scene. There are rip kits available for some dvd games, but not all. These shrink the game down to be small enough to fit onto a cd-r or multiple cd-rs, but features such as movie sequences are usually removed to do this. DVD burners have really come down in price. You can get one for about $200 now. $49 is way too much for a magic 3.1. You can get a better chip in a Messiah 2 for about that price or less.
