The crack was a new default.xbe file to make it work from the hd as well as a ppf file to patch the image. I havn't reburned yet so not sure if the ppf patch works but I copied the xbe file over and it now boots from the drive which is all I wanted anyway.

adelphia blocks me from entering that newsgroup I guess I will just have to get my patches from mIRC.
