Ps2 Bootdisk.....

OK I'm a real numpty when it comes to stuff like this so could someone spread some light on this subject. I have been toying with the idea of gerrin my PS2 chipped but heard a lot of horror stories about the PS2 breaking down after a few months etc and the other night I downloaded a 'fully working bootdisk' from the net. Now does this mean that I will be able to boot backup disks with the bootdisk and without gerrin my PS2 chipped or am I just being numb in the head?
Please could you point me in the right direction of what to do cos I have heard that the NEO chpi isn't very good and that is the chip that ppl in my town are chipping the PS2s with.
